Content and language integrated learning (CLIL)

CLIL is a type of bilingual education, usually used to teach a 'foreign' language, such as French or German.

CLIL or immersion education?

CLIL is commonly associated with educational programmes such as bilingual education, immersion education, plurilingual education, content-based language teaching, or language across the curriculum (Coyle 2008; Mehisto et al. 2008). It is argued that immersion education and CLIL are quite different. CLIL for instance often starts at secondary or in tertiary education, while immersion education starts earlier. CLIL often builds on previously gained competences in a modern foreign language. Thus, it assumes some basic language competence at the outset (Lagasabaster and Sierra 2010).
